Alcaligenes are non-fermentative gram-negative bacilli. They exist in soil and water and have been isolated from many types of clinical specimens like urine, blood, spinal fluid, pleural fluid, wounds, abscesses and faeces. These are non-saccharolytic microbes having simple nitrogenous growth requirements. Pepted Meat Broth (Meat Extract w/ Peptone) is recommended for the cultivation and maintenance of Alcaligenes species.
